This section will perform the following Activities

• List and maintain lists of Notifiable diseases according to law
• To co ordinate and supervise animal disease surveillance and reporting
• To plan and implement active disease surveillance for early warning
• To design and implement integrated programmes for control of Tran boundary livestock diseases
• To provide veterinary investigation Services, testing and field diagnosis
• To collect, collate and analyze livestock disease data and report to National and international institutions and organizations
• To detect and mitigate animal disease emergencies (Disaster risk reduction)
• To provide skills for animal disease surveillance to Veterinary Staff in Local Government Authorities

ANIMAL DISEASE REPORTING PERFORMANCE AND REFLECTED ANIMAL HEALTH STATUS FOR THE YEAR 2005.

Tanzania, with an estimated livestock population of 17.4 million cattle 12.5 million goats 3.6 million sheep 0.88 million pigs and 47 million poultry has an enormous potential. To be able to exploit the potential we need to have accurate, reliable and timely livestock information which will help to have better planning, decision making, and policy formulation.
Tanzania has established an Animal Disease Surveillance System whose purpose is to provide information on animal diseases and other livestock production parameters and avail inferences for planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating and re-planning disease control programmes.
