Livestock Breeding inthe context of LIRTRA mandate

Tanzania envisages identifying and conserving livestock breeds of unique characteristics and endangered for extinction.

This task will be directed by a Special Unit established in the Ministry of Livestock Development Structure for Livestock Identification, Registration and Traceability that will work closely with the Department of Livestock Research, Extension and .Training Coordination, the National Livestock Research Institute and the Department of Livestock Products & Livestock Marketing Infrastructure Development whose Animal Breeders Specialists will be involved in the initial identification (inventory), multiplication and characterisation while LIRTRA Unit will register and track their conservation/

LIRTRA will have a Principal Officer preferably an Animal Breeder who will coordinate these activities and assist the Director in all matters pertaining to biodiversity and farm animal genetic resource conservation. The principal officer will liaison with regional (SADC, EAC, AU-IBAR) and International (FAO) organization in Farm Animal Genetic Conservation programmes.
