The unit is responsible for management and conservation of livestock resources available and those under the threat of extinction. The unit perform the following activities: - To develop and coordinate livestock Genetic Resources Identification and Traceability
- To develop and implement Livestock Identification technologies and Recording Systems for various production systems.
- To develop and implement Registration of Livestock and maintenance of Herd Books and National Livestock Registry.
- Link with local and international organizations on Recording Systems and Traceability.
- To provide for protection and welfare of livestock
- To initiate, coordinate and where applicable implement breeding programs for indigenous livestock genetic resources,
- To conserve, livestock breeds with unique characteristics with particular attention to those in danger of extinction,
- To develop and implement strategies for the utilization of indigenous breeds in crossbreeding programs for suitable environments.
- To maintain, breeds of livestock developed in Tanzania (Mpwapwa breed and blended goats), and other livestock genetic resources
- To design of sustainable animal breeding programmes and to provide guidelines for livestock genetic improvement
- Establish of Open Breeding Scheme and other breeding programs and support formation of Animal Breeders Association.
- To support and coordinate artificial insemination and embryo transfer programmes for improvement of livestock genetic resources.
